Origin and meaning
The songwriter of the “One Two Three Four Five” nursery rhyme is not known. It was first printed in Mother Goose's Melody in 1765. Until the late nineteenth century, the earliest version of the nursery rhyme had only one stanza. Also, in the lyrics, “Hare” was used instead of “fish”. The modern version is credited to Henry Bolton.
Used as counting-out rhyme
“One Two Three Four Five” is used as counting-out nursery rhyme by young children and kids. The game has many local or regional variants.
This simple games is played to choose a player from a group to be “it”, for the purpose of playing another game. No material or props are required to the play and kids play with spoken words. Sometimes, the singing is accompanied by hand gestures.
In the counting-out game, usually one player points at each player in a circle formed by players while singing or reciting the song. At each word, new player is pointed at and at the end of the nursery rhyme, one who is pointed is “it” or “out”.
The game is also played in a different way at some places! Players standing in a circle put two feet in while reciting the rhyme. At the conclusion, that player removes one foot and the rhyme begins with next person. In this version, it is the player who has removed both feet first is “it” or “out”.
